Hi Guys,
I managed to get hold of a copy of "Flight and Aircraft Engineer " 14 January 1955. On page 39 there is an interesting article on the Lockheed L-1449 which is an extensively redesign of the Super Constellation /L-1649 Starliner. The L-1449 is expected to fly 70mph more than the Douglas DC-7C and 30mph more than the Douglas DC-7D.
Power plants to include : four Pratt & Whitney  PT2 turboprops of 6,000 e.s.h.p., Rolls Royce R.B.109/Tynes,  Pratt & Whitney T52s, Allison T56s or Bristol B.E.25s as alternatives. Cruising speed should be 420mph at 30,000ft.
An impressive wing that's 27ft more span than the Starliner.
Unfortunately the L-1449 was never built.
Meanwhile a paper study was undertaken of a thin-wing version of the Douglas DC-7D with Tynes/R.B.109s.

I have ruined a few 1/72 Heller and Airfix Lockheed Constellation kits in process of " the thin-wing" or shoulder wing. However I did manage to graft the wings from a Lockheed P-3 Orion to the wings of a Heller Constellation before someone stepped on it. Two alternative wings that do work are the C-130 and the Avro Shackleton Mk3.
  As discussed I don't have a 1/72 DC-7D, the closest I've got in the stash is a DC-6B.
Prices of the Revell Br1150 Atlantic are on the increase,  although the C-160 are around the £25 price range.
(Got both in the stash).'

Out of curiosity, why not put this in one of the existing Connie threads? Especially seeing
as you started the second one.

Didn't want to confuse the two different designs for the Starliner.
As far as my research into the L-1449 there is just a line drawing. The wing resembles a stretch version of the Electra/P-3 Orion in the layout.

The B-29 wings also work,  as I used the Revell Br1150 Atlantic RR Tynes on a C-97 and the Revell Lockheed P-3C Orion engines on another C-97.
I do have two Academy 1/72 KC-97 tankers in my stash and a 1/72 P-3C Orion.
To save cutting two Revell C-160 kits might be better as the engines come separately before assembly.
