Hobbes

The secret war, by Max Hastings. £ 10.

~500 pages, a high-level overview of all sorts of covert activity (espionage, partizans, SIGINT/decryption) and how/if they influenced the war. Some sobering conclusions (many espionage efforts yielded no useful intelligence at all, or conversely weren't acted upon when the intelligence was useful).
