Aggressor paint schemes

In the Sep 2017 issue of "Combat Aircraft", there is an excellent article on various aggressor aircraft.  Some of the camo schemes are very unique and colorful.  Does anyone know how these schemes are created?  Do the various aggressor units use models to preview the schemes?

US aggressor schemes are typically copies (or heavily inspired by) typical Russian/Soviet schemes - even though created with FS tones and sometimes individual mixed of these.
There are some really nice (if not weird schemes), my personal favorite is a USN TA-4J with the sihouette of a MiG17 painted on all surfaces in sand and brown - and any "Skyhawk excess" is painted in light grey. Looks interesting, one day I might tackle this stunt at home.

You mentioning that has given me an idea.  Mig 21 silhouette on a F5?

I just saw where the Airborne Tactical Advantage Company (ATAC) has purchased about 64 Mirage F.1s to be aggressor aircraft for a USAF contract.  There should be some very interesting schemes to come out of this.

There have also been privately operated Draken aggressors, IIRC, and some Lansen were used, too (probably only as target tugs, though).

That takes some figuring out, but it's a great paintjob they did there. 

I found this 4-view of the same aircraft which makes it clearer, and there's pics of a model of it on Hyperscale too.





[Later] Just realised that the model is of a single seater A-4,  I wonder if there's more than one of them?

There must be more than just one. I know of a different one, which had the MiG-17 silhouette from below painted in a Russian Blue tone against the light grey A-4 background. The sand/earth scheme from above was very similar, though.

There were several Hornets painted in a similar way, with the trailing edge tip of the vertical tail and exhausts greyed out, to represent MiG-29's.

VFA-127, IIRC (since dis-established). Had some correspondence with them, got a sheet of plans for the scheme, got an ESCI F/A-18 and the transfers that were available...
