Scribing questions

I'm having a heck of a time with scribing new lines, and rescribing old ones. New ones are not so bad so long as I do the whole thing, but my lines are shakey at best. But matching old lines from say sanding a join, or trying to get mismatched joins to align. I can't seem to match the depth, or the width and it's truely frustraiting. I did a smashing job with a seafury from Hobbycrap, but as anyone whose built that kit knows, there is a set of panel lines that suck in the starboard wing. I screwed up the ting trying to make the lines match the rest of the kit... grrr.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial or give some hints?

First of all, make sure your scribing tool is well-sharpened!!!

Then, use Dymo tape,

an erasing shield,

or one of those etched-brass templates for a guide.

Finally, here's a Hyperscale link for you:

While doing the dreaded scribing on the Monterey, I ran out of Dymo tape so went down to the local stationary shop to get some more. I nearly had a heart attack when the lady there told me it cost £13.00/roll:o :o :o :o

While I had no option but to buy it if I'm to get the Monterey ready for Telford, does anyone know of an alternative for Dymo tape please?

A strip of plasticard? 0.3 mm is nice and flexible. Cut a strip ~2 cm wide so it's stiff enough across (so you won't push it aside when scribing).

I tried that before Harro, but I couldn't hold the strip in contact with the curved surface of the wing. Perhaps I should try taping it down?

The 'new improved' Dymo tape is totally useless for our purposes as it's too flexible and nowhere near thick enough, so that's £13  down the drain, but maybe I can sell it on eBay as I've only used about 5" of it.

That'll be the stuff that is printed onto rather than deformed as in the good old days. You can still get it and I may have a spare roll you can have Kit.

It apparently produces white letters on a black tape according to the lady in the shop, and there's also the opposite version available too.

If you do have some going spare I'd welcome it with open arms Alastair, thanks for the offer.

Do you have a product number? I might have a matching label machine.

Librarian

It takes time and planning but I've found a use for those pesky leftover plasticard strips...I PVA them in place. When dry they are perfect for scribing and then easily peel away...as does the glue. There are limits to this technique and only then do I use expensive alternative...saves a LOT of Dymo

It looks like it's 45021 Harro, that number's on the cardboard sleeve that the tape roll came in, and on the roll casing itself. It looks like they're all '450something' as the other colours in the range start 450 too.

PVA? Hmmmm, I may give that a go, thanks for that idea too.

I have been using electrical tape.
Not the good soft stuff that wraps nicely round wiring and stretches when required and otherwise does what it is intended to but the nasty hard shiny stuff that you buy from the servo in an emergency.
You have to be gentle but if your scriber is sharp then it works.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.
