Glass Display domes at Ikea

Ikea are selling glass display domes on base for what seems to me to be very reasonable prices for real glass, not plastic. I had a look at one in the shop and the glass seems pretty smooth and ripple-free. The gold bases are a bit cheesy but you could always paint them. They'd be ideal for figures of course, or you could be a bit 'creative' about fitting some kind of aircraft/armour/ship diorama into one.

19cm high x 11cm diameter, with gold base, £7.95

26cm high x 15cm diameter, with gold base, £15.00

27cm high x 14cm diameter, with wooden base, £15.00

Some random non-figure ideas that you could put in these:

1/144th scale Stuka going straight down

1/144th scale BAC Lightning going straight up

Pair of small 1/144th scale aircraft dogfighting

1/144th scale helo rescuing someone from the sea (replace the rotors with a plastic disc trimmed to fit).

1/72nd scale fire-fight on a spiral staircase

1/72nd scale large-calibre anti-aircraft gun with it's barrel pointing straight upwards

1/100th scale Apollo LM just about to touch down

1/100th scale Apollo LM ascent stage blasting off

1/1250th scale ship hunting a submarine (ship on a disc of translucent blue plastic, supported by a tube of the same stuff)

Any vertically-launched missile that will fit

'Spinning Top' shaped space station that naturally sits at an angle in the dome.

Would also work very well for large scale figures, at 1:8 or smaller. My 1:12 resin Priss from Bubblegum Crisis should fit into one of them.

Got to have a look at the local IKEA catalogue, thanks for the tip. Some time ago they also had square, clear display boxes with integrated LED lighting at the base.

Having furnished the majority of my house with IKEA, they've always got unique and great stuff.  I still have, and use, a 23yo Billy bookcase they no longer have (about 30" in width).

Heck, even the Game of Thrones costume department shops at IKEA:

You could just get 1/72 machines in the 15cm one if it's internal diameter (and assuming the diameter is accurate), although the Lightning would be scraping the sides.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

A 1/100th Stuka works out at 13.8cm wingspan and you can get one (Victrix). You can get several 1/144th ones. At 1/72nd it works out at 19.17cm.

A 1/72nd Lightning works out at 14.73cm, so it'd be a squeeze, depending on the thickness of the glass. The 1/100th Tamiya/Ben Hobby one would fit in the small dome, let alone the big one!

Got my sums wrong on the Stuka! :banghead:
