Some countries operate trolley buses in the public transport sector, using an electric-diesel hybrid engine when the pantograph arm is disengaged.
Some lorries have been adapted for the pantograph system to be fitted for short circuit work, and trials are being carried out for the widespread use on motorways using a diesel-electric engine to overtake and exit/join at a junction.
But what if you could combine the electrified railways with the pantograph equipped lorries, a second set of boogies would be needed for the rails but the electricity would be provided by the overhead power lines.
Initially the costs to set up a network of electrified overhead power lines on the major motorways and A roads would be paid by the government, with grants available to the commercial transport industry filtering down to the man with a van.
In the whiffing world there are model train sets that have static and powered pick up pantographs. I'm not too sure how easy this would be to scratch build to scale until I build one myself, but it's an interesting concept.
