Ford/Gaz truck engine query

Question for the car/truck freaks here....

I'm about to start building the Trumpeter RF-8 aerosan model for the Racing GB, and I've been trying to research what colours the various bits of the engine would have been, since the instructions are a bit simplistic, just saying to paint the whole thing 'steel'. The engine is from the GAZ-MM light truck, which was a modification of the GAZ-AA truck, which in turn, was a licence-build Ford AA. As best I can figure out from pictures, this inline-4 engine has the exhaust and intake manifolds on the same side, the right-hand side as mounted in a vehicle. However, this throws up a peculiarity in the kit design. Here's an excerpt from the instructions:



This is a view from the right-hand side of the engine as installed in the vehicle. Parts B24 and B16 are a reduction gearbox for the propellor, which takes the place of the truck's clutch and gearbox. Am I right in thinking that Part B23 is the exhaust manifold and part B33 is the intake manifold? If so, then surely they shouldn't be connected together?!!? In every pic I can find, the B23 part goes straight down into an exhaust pipe and B33 is connected to a low-mounted carb and air-cleaner. Have Trumpeter just screwed up here, or is this some exotic cold-weather mod that maybe has some bits missing?

I suspect that Trumpeter have simplified a cold weather design in which the exhaust manifold was used to warm the intake charge.  B23 does indeed look like the exhaust manifold and B33 the inlet.  And yes, there should prolly be a carburettor on there somewhere.
