DH 88 Comet CC.1

Well, I really wasn't going to join in this Group Build, because I have an appalling record of not finishing any I've entered so far,
also a severe lack of Mojo recently and because I'm currently working in Sweden and living in a Hotel.
However the Sunday Morning before i left home I grabbed a couple of kits and a Basic tool/paint kit......
That was probably the first mistake
The 2nd Mistake was deciding to buld the Fairly? recent KP Kit of DH's wonderful Comet.
Now I know its a limited run Kit, but to be honest apart from a more detailed Cockpit it doesn't appear to be much better
than ye old Airfix Kit, the fit has been in places somewhat challenging.
Anyway; enough of my Whinging and on with some pictures;

We have a complete airframe
Its not my best work and i probably handicapped my self with the minimalistic tool kit (complete with  blunt knife )
and choice of kit. Just paint and stickers to go....

Interested in what you do with this. I turned the old Airfix kit into an RAF PR aircraft complete with nose wheel a year or so ago. The one thing to say about that old kit is that it hasn't that many parts to muck up 

I've looked at this kit a few times and wondered ? Just glad to see it in the flesh so to speak.

Hmm... the kit,
Well I suppose I should say its a typical short run kit,
but as I've only built two Kits of this sort before I don`t think I can.
It has some very fine engraved detail/panel lines (most of which you will loose due to the PSR required)
The fuselage has a nicely detailed interior with ribs, seats, control columns, instrument panels etc
most of which you wont see if you paint it black as per the instructions and take into account the framed canopy. (G-ACSS cockpit is black now, wether they were all black when built I don't know)
There are no alignment pins on the fuselage and i had a large mismatch underneath (possibly sortable by bending/and or adding tabs to the sides before joining)
you have a choice of three nose cones (none of which fit, all being slightly to small in diameter) Much Sanding.
1 prototype (no nose light)
2 nose light (the one we all know i guess)
3 a pointy one which i believe should have a small spinner (electrical generator?)
The tail planes have location tabs (which need fettling to fit in the corresponding holes)
The Mainplanes are a butt fit.... I managed with copious amounts of Revell Contacta glue, you could also add pins i suppose. Speaking of mainplanes I aligned the tips,trailing edges etc and ended up with a step between the upper and lower half's of the wings of approx. 1.5mm were they would join the fuselage (much scraping and sanding to ensure a good(ish) join)
Engine nacelles..... don't match the fairings moulded onto the underneath of the wings and there is a huge step between the nacelle and the wing top surface (see my picture above) all sortable with some sanding.
The Undercarriage is also quite detailed but suffers from fine mouldings (with mould lines to scrape off) and huge sprue gates, needing careful cutting. As do other parts.
Propellers- spinners have rather large sink marks and you need to guess drill the separate propeller blades. Decals/transfers are very fine and with a thin carrier film- be warned they stick exactly where you place them... and don't like to be moved (I lost one of the tail serials because of that)
To me the whole canopy doesn't look quite right (a bit like the Revell/Hasagawa Lightning Canopy- it looks like a Lightning but....) if you get what I mean.
other than that it makes up into something that looks like a Comet.
Would I build another one? Given more time and patience maybe.
With apologies for my terrible English I'm afraid living in germany for over 20 years i seem to loose what little English comprehension i once had.

I can't see ANYthing wrong with your English Keith, and you've made a good job out of a sow's ear of kit from the look of it.

Thanks for the kit review  Sounds like a limited run kit from a few years ago. Some of the more recent ones are excellent, although even there ,there doesn't seem to be any consistency within a manufacturer's range.

Never the less you've done a great job looking at the finished model. especially like the finish
