He built his aircraft to solid engineering principles - strong, simple as possible to create and maintain - and - many aircraft designers shared this naivety - faith that the promised engines would be a) forthcoming & available; and b) would work correctly.

Viz one of Blackburn's late creations, the Buccaneer. First built with a pair of squibs as engines and finally with some proper grunt.

They say Buccs arrived at Brough as forgings, which were then machined from the solid to make the desired shape.........................
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model

Apparently that's what the RAF said of them, too, once they'd gotten hooked by them.  "Machined from solid, not built."

I did a bit of research on Blackburn, trying - in vain - to find what the Blackburn Blackburn's intended role was.

First line in the Wikipedia article on the beast:
Quote from: WikipediaThe Blackburn R-1 Blackburn was a 1920s British single-engine fleet spotter/reconnaissance aircraft built by Blackburn Aircraft.

I was looking for something a bit more authoritative than Wiki, which is why I was going through the company website.  However, you're right - the "R-1" should have tipped me off.  :)

The opening line from the relevant Putnam's states "the Blackburn Blackburn was a contemporary of the Avro Bison and when it came to ugliness there was little to choose between the two". Both types were designed for spotting and reconnaissance duties.

There was also a trainer version

As it happens I have the Joystick Avro Bison and also the Esoteric Blackburn Dart (the BB replacement). Both are vacuforms and may well hit the workbench if the lockdown continues.  Then there's the Armstrong Whitworth Atlas  by Phoenix also on the waiting list.

Am I going mad ?

Mad definitely mad.

Just found an Esoteric Boulton Paul Overstrand, a resin Karaya Blackburn Blackburd (their spelling) and a resin Boulton Paul Bodmin by Lukgraph.  Now I've got a choice of uglies !  :banghead:

An OVERSTRAND?  :o

That's got more wires than the Severn Bridge!

And the Blackburd may have even MORE!

What to do, what to do !

All of them, simultaneously.

Always had a "thing" for both the Overstrand and the Sidestrand.

I recall a 1/72 scratchbuilt Overstrand, mostly vacformed, built by Les Whitehouse (I think...............) back in the early 70s that he showed at an IPMS London meeting (actually I don't think were any held anywhere else back then!) that just produced gasps of amazement from everyone.

The Wooksta!

IPMS Tyneside has been around since the early 70s, possibly earlier.
