This is a thesis presented to the University of Waterloo for a Master of Mathematics degree in Computer Science in 2010. It's an interesting read, although since it's primarily concerned with how to better simulate physical kitbashing in CGI, there are sections that anyone not interested in computer graphics or information theory can safely skip over. The key thing is that it analyses how and why surface detailing 'works' which is going to be of some interest to anyone building a spacecraft model.
