What should we NOT still see on models these days?

I'm going to chime in after tonight's building and say a modern jet kit should NOT include a crap ejection seat.  Why is it that in 1982 Monogram could give me an excellent three-piece representation of a MB Mk.10, but in the 21st century Trumpeter give me nine pieces that make up this abomination of a Mk.2?

So I got that going for me...which is nice....

I agree, especially with the prices kit go by these days... :banghead:

Because it's by Trumpeter. No more need be said................

Misaligned molds. Infuriating to find that fiddly little bits like undercarriage legs look like two bits of half-round joined by a drunken carpenter. Very difficult to fix, and ugly if you don't. They really should take more care. Don't they have locating pins and holes?  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

i recently started cleaning out the box of spareparts kits, and i came across a heller 1/144 E-2C Hawkeye.
the only thing useful in this kit is the radome, the fuselage is horrible, and did i mention the RIVETS

you would think, a kit manufactures in the late 90's/2000's would at least looks right and be without the bloddy rivets, if you look at the revell kit, wich came out at the same time, its clean and almost perfect, Hellers 1/144 series of aircraft are rivet monsters.

the Rafale-M kit is just as bad, no detail, not even a cockpit, copared to the cheaper revell kit, that came out a year earlier!

you think, a company like Heller, with a decent reputation, would not hire amatures to make new moulds!
this is not the 1960's/70's anymore.

I suspect that some mold-makers get paid by the rivet for some reason. Even worse is rivets on aircraft that didn't have them, or raised rivets on ones that had flush rivets. The ancient Monogram PBY-5A had rivets on the rear half of the wing, which in real life was fabric. And if I recall correctly the rivets on the Frog Shackleton were rougher that any sandpaper you tried to remove them with!  ;D

The rivets on the FROG Shackleton are a legend in their own right!  :banghead: :banghead:

Having just de-riveted the wings, engines and tail of one for my Avro Leeds build, and it was an early original FROG one too, I confirm the hardness of them. It took two sanding blocks to finish them off! And the styrene of that period was like concrete anyway, I'm not so sure about the Revell re-pops, hopefully they were a tad softer.

The original Revell FW-200 has amazing rivets.  Not sure about the hardness of the (sky blue) plastic though.
An examination of the one I have has convinced me I should buy the more modern version.

For what it's worth, the old Condor is actually quite accurate in outline, although the fin chord is out by a few mm.  Lot less fiddly to build than the newer one.

The Revell Condor I really liked was the transport/airliner one, the B, although the wheels were way too thin.  Really nice kit, but the best release was the military transport rather than the earlier airliners as the plastic in the former was way too soft and it tended to warp badly.  No rivets on it at all, just nice crisp recessed panels.

Thanks for the info Lee.  It was the sight of all them rivets that put me off.

TBH, I can live with rivets up to a point.  It's poor fit combined with lack of reasonable detail that boils my piss.

There's no need to keep on cashing in with those old and hopelessly undetailed Geminis and Saturns every space anniversary. They are such a disappointment of a model kit.
Those kits were the actual reason I converted to paper models.
