Soviet battleship Moskva (Stalin)


The Soviet Soyuz-class battleships were a class of battleships begun by the Soviet Union in the late 1930s.
They were designed in response to the battleships being built or planed by Germany under the plan Z details which were provided by the spys in the german high command.
Only four hulls of the fifteen originally planned had been laid down by 1938, when the decision was made to cut the program to only four ships to divert resources to an expanded the army rearmament program.
These ships original design rivalled the Imperial Japanese Yamato class and America's planned Montana class in size although with significantly stronger firepower: nine 533-millimeter (21 inch) guns compared to the nine 460-millimeter (18.1 in) guns of the Japanese ships and a dozen 16-inch (406.4 mm) on the Montana's and the German H42 class 18.8 inch(480mm) .
Construction of the first four ships was plagued with difficulties as the Soviet shipbuilding and related industries were not prepared to build such large ships.
One battleship was cancelled on 19 October 1940 after serious construction flaws were found.
Construction of two of the other three ships was suspended shortly after Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, and then scraped during 1942.
The last ship "Sovetskaya Rossiya" (Soviet Russia) under construction at the Leninskiy Komsomol Shipyard in Komsomolsk-on-Amur located on the west bank of the Amur River in the Russian Far East, was rushed forward as it was not under direct threat of the invading Germen army, and was renamed at launch after the great leader Stalin
As designed, the ships, were 269.4 meters (883 ft 10 in) long overall. They had a beam of 38.9 meters (127 ft 7 in) and at full load a draft of 10.4 meters (34 ft 1 in).
The hull form was very stubby looking when compared to other ships with a very short bow form, and this coupled with the relatively low length-to-beam ratio of 7.14:1, meant that immensely powerful turbines were necessary to achieve even modest speeds of 28 knots.
Stalin's decision that the Project 23-class ships would use three shafts instead of four increased the load on each shaft and reduced propulsive efficiency, although it did shorten the length of the armoured citadel and thus overall displacement.
The ships were provided with aircraft facilities to handle up to four KOR-2 flying boats which would be launched by the two catapults mounted on the stern. A sunken hanger accessed by a ramp. and a novel beaching ramp on the stern were the seaplane could be winched aboard.
The main armament of  9 21 inch (53cm) rifled guns in 3 turrets was found to be unable to carry out a traditional broadside due the forces on the hull so a pattern firing on one barrel of each turret in a group was used,  which also meant the firing rate of the guns also increased to 9 shells on target every 3 minutes
A secondary armament. and 24 5-inch guns it two-gun turrets and numerous small calibre anti-aircraft guns were also fitted
The protection of the ship was a Krupp cemented armour type with a Waterline belt of between 180–420 mm (7.1–16.5 inch and a Deck armour of 25–155 mm (1.0–6.1 in)
The main Turrets had protection of 230mm(9.1 inch)  on the sides and rear and 495 mm on the face (19.5 in) 
The armoured command and control conning tower were fitted with 425 mm (16.7 in) protection
The torpedo defence system was designed to withstand torpedoes with warheads equivalent to 800 kg (1,763lb) of TNT. The ships were intended to be able to remain afloat with any six adjacent compartments flooded or with five torpedo hits. The shafts and propellers were also covered by a large bilge keel to give protection also
The Stalin made her surprise international debut when she sailed into Tokyo bay carrying Joseph Stalin to witness the surrender of Japan onboard the American battleship Missouri.
By the end of 1950s, the ship was transferred to a training school at the port of Vladivostok.
When the Americans first talked about reactivated the Iowa class battleships in 1978 soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev order the rebuilding of the Stalin (now renamed Moskva. (Moscow) in 1957) to counter any threat these ships posed to the surface fleet.
Taken in hand by the same  Leninskiy Komsomol Shipyard which built her she was lengthened to 315 meters to accommodate  6 pressurized water-cooled reactors 70,000 hp (52 MW) each powering turbo electric drive system for the 3 shafts, removed from the Echo 2 type submarines the yard was already constructing at the time to speed construction and a new set 12  Kolomna 14D40 diesel engines providing extra speed and electrical load as needed, again taken from state railways stock  intended for other projects.
This along with an improved bow design raised the top speed to 32 knots (59 kph, 37 mph) although cruising speed was 22 knots on nuclear only
The original superstructure and funnels was removed from aft  the bridge and replaced to accommodate an array of surface and air search radars, and the aircraft handling cranes aft were removed and the beach  partially covered over to accommodate a helicopter pad and the hanger altered to provide accommodation for up to six Ka-25K over the Horizon targeting version helicopters.
All the secondary armament was removed and 3 AK-130 automatic naval cannon each with two 5.1-inch guns each fitted along with 6 AK 230 twin 30mm air defence guns.
Also fitted were launchers for 16 P-1000 Vulcan (SS-N-12 Sandbox) anti-ship missiles

2  OSA-M (SA-N-4 Gecko) SR SAM systems
When she sailed for the first time after refit in 1985, she was considered the most powerful surface combatant ever.
She was put into reserve in 1998 as too expensive to operate and crew and was taken to scrap in 2010.
