A guy I know from S Africa told me they had Daks with quad .50's in the cargo door during SWA border war.

:o

Why would anyone bother putting a 2,400lb trainable mount in a C-47/Dakota?
There'd be no reason to carry that extra weight around as it wouldn't grant any
sort of advantage.

Theres no such thing as 'too much' for the US military  ;D

I am attracted to the 4 .50 cals, for aesthetic reasons (symmetry). It is a what-if.

Whatever.

Ummm I don't think he said anything about the mounting of the weapons - just that there were x4, 0.50 cal guns. I agree that there is little point in a trainable mount, and I have not seen any pics.

This is an FC-47 doorway .30 cal quad mount on the right, so just scaled-up to .50 cal is what I imagine:

Just stumbled across fact that the Colombians are operating Basler Dakota gunships .

In their war on drugs

So Spooky lives on and plenty of WHIF possibilities if you decided that other Latin American countries were using them too

Current armament 2 Gau19 mini guns and 1 m3 50 cal

Although it has also fielded  a GIAT M621  20mm in place of  one GAU19

In 2017 they tested a 30mm  from a retired Mirage 5COAM fighter

Basler Dakota conversion sets are available from  two different  sources  too, and one set includes a different  cockpit/forward  fuselage  too. You could  also put an Emerson turret on the underside of the fuselage  with a 3 barrelled  20 mm gun, and have a crew member  sat at a console operating it. Maybe put a few hellfire missiles under the wings to take out heavier armour that could be  wielding AAA,  or causing  problems for friendlies.
