A Suggestion for the 2022 Wiffies

Gentlemen I've had a suggestion from a member which I would like to put up for consideration.

It is that the top 3 placed builds in each Group Build should automatically be nominated for that season's Whiffy Awards.

Now I feel we have three options here. One would be to go with the suggestion as it is, a second would be to simply say that the winner of each GB is automatically nominated for the Wiffies and the third is to leave things as they are.

In a purely personal capacity, but still with my Admin Cap on, I just tend towards the winner in order to make an already packed Whiffy nomination and selection process slightly more manageable. If we go with the top three then it means someone (probably me) has to ensure that it's done, which is another thing to remember. Going with the winner makes that slightly easier I think as the main "problem" will be duplicate nominations, both automatic and member nominated.

I should also point out that there's nothing to stop people nominating GB podium builds/entries in the normal manner anyway.

So there it is. Open for discussion gents. Any changes will not take place until the 2022 Wiffies which means that GB winners from the November 2020/January 2021, March /May 2021 and July/September 2021 GB's would be included. I'm confused already  ;) but I think the principle is simple enough to understand.

I'd just keep it as it is. While the GBs frequently produce outstanding pieces (within the thematic universe and also generally), I think that they should receive a separate Whiffies nomination if anyone feels that a model is eligible for the annual "contest". That's just how it has been handled, and adding all top tiers automatically to the Whiffies will make work for the Academy certainly not easier. But that's just my personal opinion.

I'll go the other way, and say yes, the top 3 or so GB votes should get an automatic whiffy entry.  I have seen some great GB entries not even get nominated for a whiffy, and they either get left out or -gasp- the dreaded self-nomination (guilty).

I am in two minds.  The top 3 is a bit excessive I think.  Much easier to just make it the winner.  Leaving it the way it is, means we have a greater variety of nominations and they have grabbed someone sufficiently to get them motived to make a nomination.  I think the winner is good enough.  Alternatively, we could have a separate category for GB winners?

I support my fellow South Australian's statements in the following order:

1. Leave it as it is; although most GB's produce a ridiculous number of high quality entrants (enough for a Whiffies of their own), some struggle to get three build entries & sometimes they're not of the best quality or conceptualisation.

2. Special GB Winners category; same as (3.) but only into this specific category as there's far too much work, otherwise, for the Admin's (Chris).

3. GB winning build only; more work than (2.), as the Admin's (Chris) would have to work out which categories to nominate the build for.

I like the "Special GB Winners category" idea as a good/practical compromise.

I made a similar suggestion (may have only been in a PM rather than a post) a couple of years ago, but only for GB winners.
Whilst I acknowledge the additional organisational burden, limiting scope to just GB winners wouldn't be so problematic, would it?
So yes, I'd support a 'Best GB Winner' award, but only based on the GB winners.  Field of 3/4 maximum, given the GB schedule.

I would go for the top three and then in a special GB winners category.
As for the admin load, we could make it a job for the GB moderators?

I'm minded to plump for the Top Three (assuming there are three place holders) going into a separate category in the Annual Whiffies award.

Probably easier to organise than others and also I feel that it goes along with an underlying feeling that they should be rewarded in the Whiffies.

I'll give it another couple of weeks before plumping for an option.

A sort of 'GB Podium Class'?

That's quite a good idea, yes.

Right gents.

I'm going to plump for the "GB Podium Class " suggestion. The Top Three (assuming there are three place holders) going into a separate category in the Annual Whiffies award.

This will come into effect from the 2022 Whiffies  so nothing to be done for a while and I'll make a diary note to remind myself when the time comes.
