Obviously not meant for combat aircraft, these are real schemes used on showpiece aircraft:

World-wide

JASDF fighters

Hope these give you some ideas!

I've got teh 1/48 Hasegawa kit of the F-15J with the eagle painted on it for 304 Sqdn, JASDF.  I'm waiting to build it 'til I can do it justice, though.  Lots of interesting schemes there.
