The RNs Corsairs had clipped wing-tips, to better fit in their low-cielinged hangar decks, I'm told ...  Here's a picture. 

Yup, 8" of each wingtip (according to my Putman's British Naval Aircraft *) and they went to sea a fair bit before the USN's as well. Basically the FAA wasn't fussy about take off/landing characteristics, it was just happy it had a decent aeroplane.

* I would also swear I've seen a figure of 4" mentioned in a couple of publications ?

Maybe it was 4" off each wing to give a total of eight?

Putnam's actually says "of 16" less span", but it is specifically referring to the Mk II. If I did indeed read the 4" figure somewhere I'll no doubt come across it a some stage.
