The Harry Fisher-class, or Fisher-class patrol gunboats were designed as the war drums sounded in Asia, with Imperial Japan rattling her saber at the Republic of China. They were purpose built ocean going patrol gunboats, designed to replace the outdated WW1 era Clemson-class destroyers, and awarded to the Todd Shipyards of Tacoma, WA. Initially equipped with two twin 5"/38 Mk 29 turrets, two single 3"/50 DP guns, 5 quad 1.1" AAA and 4 .50cal MGs, 1 quintuple Mark 14 torpedo launcher, and as fast as a destroyer at 37.8 kts. There were only 4 ships commissioned as of 07/08DEC1941, and the USS Harry Fisher was the first lost to the enemy, of the 10 eventually completed, all of them served in the Pacific Theater of Operations, 2 were stationed at the Panama Canal Zone, 1 served with distinction in the Guadalcanal Campaign, 2 were at Pearl Harbor and survived on 07DEC1941. The type survived the war to be turned over to the US Coast Guard, after which sold them to Panama, were they received updates and served into the 1980's as customs boats.
