Avro Shackleton

What's this aerial called mounted on the top of a Shackleton MR3 please? And what does it do as well?

I was wondering if I could fit one to my Montery, with a suitable fairing of course, or would it be out of time frame?

Orange Harvest and it's an ESM receiver using S and X band radar. Used as a directional bearing to surface and submarines without giving them the aircraft's position.

There's apparently two different types, although they look very similar.

It's a spare in the Airfix Shackleton if you go for the white/MSG option.

That's brilliant gentlemen, just what I needed to know, thanks. 

It seems it came into use in 1961 which fits quite nicely into the Monterey's time frame, so I think I'll install it in a retractable bay on top of the fuselage somewhere.

As it happens I've got two FROG MR3s and I've just retrieved one of the aerials as a result of your posts, thanks again.

Right looking at it, it was closed back in 2011 because it had got very nasty.

Therefore I think the best thing is for me to simply retitle this thread "Avro Shackleton" ?

I too have attempted to go down the passenger version of the Avro Shackleton C.2 and C.3 by flattening the nose and adding windows plus rear cargo doors. The doors came from a Matchbox Privateer and so did the single fin tail,  the windows were from a Airfix Rotodyne, (not fitted in  the  photos  on Flickr sjmccolm681) this didn't go to plan and I then took the bold step to add the twin tail boom from the Fairchild C-119 . The engines were changed to those from the Academy Boeing C-97 but I kept the  contra-rotating propellers.
Many other attempts of adding the teardrop radome from the Mach2 Grumman E-1 and the E-2 Hawkeye plus turboprop engines resulted in the Avro Carlton twin engined with it's big brother the Avro Charlton the four engined turboprop AEW.
Then again on my blog page various twin engined turbofaned engines have been started resulting in the tailless Avro Shackleton with the twin tail fins added to the wingtips and a canard inserted into the nose.
It definitely helps if you use the Airfix kit with the Alleycat Avro Shackleton T.4 conversion set or you can make the MR.1. They now do the whole range of the Mk.1 Shackleton.
