In November 2011, people aboard a plane from Exeter to Newcastle in the UK witnessed a wheel break off as the landing gear retracted. Once a stewardess checked the landing gear, the captain began making an emergency landing.

Doesn't say specifically, but it seems that they elected to return to Exeter. Unless I'm missing something, I can't see why. Newcastle airport seems just as capable of handling an emergency, the flight there would burn off fuel, making the aircraft lighter, therefore less stress on the airframe, and the passengers wouldn't be unduly delayed. Wondering if weather may have been a factor; Newcastle only has one runway, and if crosswind that day was a problem then landing with faulty gear could be dangerous.
