Just been poking around the Airfix website and realised that if you play your cards right, you can get Airfix Club membership super-cheap at the moment.

The key is to join their Hobby Rewards programme BEFORE signing up for Airfix Club. Hobby Rewards (HR) gives you 10 points for every pound you spend, plus you get bonus points for various activities. Bonus points can be spent right away, but points earned by buying things are "pending" (can't be used) for 21 days after delivery in case you return something. 100 HR points are worth £1 at the checkout (you use them on the payment screen right at the end).

You get 200 bonus points for joining HR, and another 200 for completing a quick and painless marketing survey. Now you have 400 HR points that can be spent right away.

Now sign up for Airfix Club (AC). The membership is £15 but you can apply HR points to it, so it only costs you £11. What's more, you now have 110 points pending, AND you get another 300 bonus points, spendable immediately, for joining up!

Airfix Club membership is currently online only. You get 10% off all website purchases, and you can download and print out the Flying Hours passport. Since it's all online, there's no postage.

If you want the Red Box full of bumf, a Flying Hours Passport and Club Kit, then you have to buy it seperately for £12. The current Club Kit is the 2022 1/72nd "First and Last" BAe Hawk Mk.60 boxing with two kits in the box, one in red & white and one in all-black. Buying just the kit is £12, so you might as well have the Red Box.

Your AC discount drops that £12 to £10.80, and if you use your 300 new bonus points you can reduce that £10.80 to £7.80, so now you've got two Hawks for £3.90 each: not bad since the RRP of a Hawk starter set is £12, currently discounted to £10. :thumbsup:

If you wait 21 days until your 110 pending points become available, you could knock another £1.10 off that. However you will get charged £3.95 postage, unless you can combine it with other things to make a final order over £30, at which point postage is free. Even if you don't get free postage, you're still getting the Hawks for £5.33 each (assuming you wait for the 110 points).

SHORT VERSION:

STEP 1: Join the Hobby Rewards scheme. You now get 10 points for every £1 you spend, 1 point being worth £0.10 on web purchases.
Cost  = £0
Points = +200
Points total =200, pending = 0

STEP 2: Do the market research questionnaire.
Cost  = £0
Points = +200
Points total =400, pending = 0

STEP 3: Join Airfix Club (AC) using all your points. You now get 10% discount on all web purchases & access to Members Only offers such as the Red Box (inc 2 x Hawks).
Cost  = £11 (£15-£4 from 400 points)
Points = -400 (used) +300(for joining Club) +110 pending (for spending £11)
Points total =300, pending = 110

You now have a choice:

OPTION 1: Buy the Red Box immediately using all available points.
Cost  = £11.75 (£12 - £1.20 from AC discount -£3 from 300 points + £3.95 postage)
Points = -300 (used) +78 pending (for spending £7.80)
Points total = 0, pending = 188

OPTION 2: Wait 21 days then buy the Red Box using all available points.
Cost  = £10.65 (£12 - £1.20 from AC discount - £4.10 from 410 points + £3.95 postage)
Points = -410 (used) +67 pending (for spending £6.70)
Points total = 0, pending = 67

Note that in either option, if you combine your order with enough other buys to get the total (after deducting points and AC discount) to over £30, postage is free (not that this is roughly equivalent to another 13% discount on a £30 order).

With that last point in mind, I went down another route since I also wanted something from the New Year's sale and I wasn't confident it would still be there in 21 days.

I bought the AC Red Box, and two Skyhawk vs MiG-17 Dogfight Doubles, which are currently heavily discounted to £15.99 each in the sale (RRP: £36!). With the AC discount plus the 300 bonus points, and an order over £30, that means I got SIX 1/72nd jet kits for £34.77 all-in, which means they cost me £5.80 each on average. I also got another 349 pending points too (no I don't understand why it wasn't 348 either...)

RRPs of these models individually:

Hawk Mk.60: £12 (currently discounted to £10)
Skyhawk: £18
MiG-17: £18 (currently discounted to £9)

That means that if I'd bought them individually, they'd have come to £74... :o

I want some other, non-sale things too, but I'll wait for them until the 459 pending points I've got become active... :mellow:

Creative accounting to the Max H, well sorted.   ;D  :thumbsup:
