A friend in my model club is building a Spitfire. He has this question and I reckon you lot would have an idea.

Question for any spitfire enthusiasts - South African pilot Adolph Gysbert "Sailor" Malan flew the Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I: K9864
Malan flew this Spitfire on September 4, 1939
How can I tell if this was an early, mid or late version of Mk.1?

Gondor

Initially by the date and serial number. Just by using Google I was able to determine that the aircraft was a Mk.1a.

The aircraft was delivered to 74 squadron 15.2.39; AST 20.12.39; 9 MU 26.5.40; 266 Sqn 4.6.40; damaged by Bf 109s over Canterbury and forcelanded, Oare, Kent, 16.8.40; AST 29.8.40; 38 MU 10.2.41; AST 10.3.41; 9 MU8.4.41; 57 OTU 21.7.41. Collided with R6769 and crashed on bank of Dee near Flint, 8.5.42.  AST stands for Air Service Training.

To answer your question of if it was an early, mid or late version of the Mk.1, it all depends on when in its life you are modelling it as it had several trips to MU's so could easily have been upgraded through it's life.
