Spanish Civil War Curtiss Hawk

When the Seversky P-35 was awarded a USAAC contract over the Curtiss Hawk model 75, Curtiss let it be known that their entry was still a viable aircraft, and cost less money. Spain showed an interest, and placed an order for 30 aircraft to be used by the Republican forces. This was stalled when, just after losing the competition, the USAAC decided to hedge its bets by ordering three prototypes of the Curtiss product, and Spain was left in the lurch.

In an attempt to make good on their commitment, lest other potential customers lose interest, one production model was supplied to Spain, with a cautious commitment to the original contract. Political machinations, and the looming war in Europe, meant that this was the only example to make it into Spanish service. It was supplied in unpainted natural metal, and carried the Republican markings of red wingtips and empennage, with a broad red band around the rear fuselage.

The pilot was American, but his identity is not known, nor is it known if the aircraft was associated with the XV International Brigade, also known as the "Abraham Lincoln Brigade". The fact that the aircraft sported 'Hat in the Ring' markings leads historians to believe that he may have been an original member of the 94th Aero Squadron, or a descendant of a member. Records of the time are lacking, and the disposition of the aircraft and pilot are still unknown.

The Model

The Heller offering, an early and crude kit that still builds okay, although the design and engineering could be better. Instructions are infuriating, as they give part numbers, but there are no numbers on the sprues. The decals look to be useable, but as this is a whiff they will be confined to the spares bin.

A simple, clean scheme which suits it well.

- Can't be bothered to do the proper research and get it right.

Another ill conceived, lazily thought out, crudely executed and badly painted piece of half arsed what-if modelling muppetry from zenrat industries.

It is indeed and such a simple scheme, that's so difficult to get right and Ratty nailed it
Do not condemn the judgement of another because it differs from your own. You may both be wrong.
