Progress update: TSR.2, Spitfire Mk IXc & Lifeboat

There has been much speculation on the status of forthcoming Airfix kits where new or modified mould tooling is involved. At this stage Airfix is able to give the following update concerning the TSR.2, Spitfire Mk IXc and RNLI Lifeboat kits.

It is naturally our intention to get all of these kits right such that our customers are able to build the best kit we can give them. The tooling process is not always an exact science and on some occasions modifications to the master mould tool are required following examination of mould test shots, which is an iterative process until Airfix are satisfied of the kit's quality.

All three of the above kits are currently in this iterative correction process, which has caused us to miss the originally published release dates. Trevor Snowden, Airfix's R&D Engineer, is visiting the tool manufacturers at the end of November to review what we hope will be the final test shots and enable us to proceed to manufacture. Should that be the case we would expect the products to become available within the first two months of 2006. Once the mould for each has been approved Airfix will be in a position to specify an availability date.

Airfix understands that there is much anticipation surrounding these kits and wishes to apologise to its customers for any inconvenience these delays may cause. However we hope you understand and sympathise with the reasons and will bear with us during this process. We are confident that you won't be disappointed with the end result.

Kind regards

Thanks Merlin. The Airfix site was to be my next stop to check on the update.

Frankly, I would only be dissapointed if the kit never came out at all, the rest is just waiting. Having said that, I hope pictures of the definitive 1/72 scale test shots are made available as soon as possible.

However long it takes is fine by me.  Maybe they could even increase the number of kits from 10,000......

TSR.2 Sprues sighting!

Some good info on the Nimrod and sounds like the initial sprues have started to appear......Plus rumour that Airfix may be considering a 1/48 scale kit.

That means Trev may have succesfully returned from China after going there following SMW to approve the moulds.

We should get some news when Airfix relaunch their website at the end of the week.
