Your stories remind me of the "Coolstone" stories written for The Interceptor, an Air Force publication from the 50s - 70s.  Most of these great stories are available at      http://www.twrps.com/interceptor/coolindex.html

I think that one of the best is "Coolstone lights a stogie", about F-94s based out of Hamilton AFB intercepting airliners that had strayed off course when approaching the Western US.
