From the IST (Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisboa, Portugal): here seems to be a peculiar Twin-F-16, not very solid I fear.
I had drawn the DFS-25 and P-51T-2 this way, and I add today a Twin Wyvern 1 (WyWy), but... Lord, how unsafe... if one half touches the ground before the other, what would happen?

Thanks to http://www.zap16.com/images/15103.jpg here is a better view of a Portuguese Twin F-16...

Seeing the photograph above, JMNs   will laugh loudly: "Hey this is a fake picture, it is so obvious with the sky limits, proving a copy & paste process".
In return, I will smile, answering: "yes, you may be right, live in peace with your certainties". :P
While, with you what-ifers, I will explain :) : the picture above used a fake sky in order to preserve the JMN's psychological comfort: the source picture had a plain grey sky, and they would have found nothing to be comfortable. Poor JMNs, they deserved a fake sky instead... ^_^

Australians did it long before the Portuguese, obviously...

Thanks to Mart's topic RAF F-16E&F ( http://www.whatifmodelers.com/forum//index...?showtopic=9678 ), here is another Twin-F-16, a 3-seater without tailplanes: :P

Of course, this was a modeller/computer fake picture :D
...while a similar true-life photograph has been shot from a USAF tanker:

I'm surprised no one has done an updated "Project Tom-Tom" formation, though I'll admit the choices aren't that plentiful.

I had to check with Google, and all right it was the project with the F-84 FICON, actually linked tip to tip, thanks to remind us! :)
(see http://www.unrealaircraft.com/forever/pages/ficon2.php )
For an update, I think it was difficult to have such a big-plane + small-plane compound as soon as the straight wings were replaced by swept wings (B-47, B-52, B-2), unable to support a plane load at wing-tip. And with the B-1, it would be funny to have a VG wing with a Variable Direction fighter... :D

Well, I did say the choices weren't all that plentiful.  Perhaps a U-2S with a couple drones on the wingtips?

As I said with the Go229+Hs117H in "The End of Forked Ghosts", I like the idea of replacing the U-2 by a tailless plane like the Northrop B-2: with 2 Predator RPVs, the whole has 2 tails somehow, which is temporary twin-tail till the drones are launched...
(there are 1/72 Predator at Planet Models & Unicraft Models, 1/72 B-2 at Testors, so what-if...?)
