Of course, I COULD rebuild a back end on a new kit and do the PR2. In Hemp. Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! :)

I've always been fascinated with some of the engineering examples in aviation, with the Lightning being one of them. What truly amazes me however is that Lucas, Prince of Darkness, is a supplier to the RAF. I've always wondered: Does the wiring in RAF All Weather Fighters start arcing and smoking when you fly through rain?
I hope not!

You mean, like the frightening tendency the U2 had?  ^_^

Oops, forgot to add my squeals of admiration and delight Alvis! Beautiful!!!

I've already got the back story written up for my CF-100 equivalent, just got to build the thing now...

BTW - on the 'lose the lower engine' front - wasn't the upper engine on the Lightning removed upwards via removeable panels in the spine ?

Oh No, Mr. Rat!   :o

High altitude will be VERY congested.  I've got my CF-100 version ready to go, too.  RF-98F in USAF service with Operation Bordertown markings like the RB-57D.

I've been captivated by this type of conversion ever since I saw that famous PR Meteor/U-2 conversion several years back.  Can't remember who did that one, though...

Engine change on a Lightning was a 2-day horror story.  My dad still shudders if you mention the words "Lightning" and "engine change" in the same paragraph.  No wonder the Saudis would refuse to change an engine on a Lightning, claiming that it was the will of Allah that the engine had broken down, and who were they to go against his will?  ;)

Actually any kind of maintainence on the Lightning was a horror story.  There was certainly no contractual obligation for a MMHPFH of 7.9 like on the Eurofighter  :P
