This shot was taken at the Russian display, at the 1970 Expo. I seem to remember something about Mil designing and building them, and something about being in Russian service as well as Aeroflot. The guy I was talking to said that the British stole the design from the Soviets, but all the British built was a prototype, and it wasn't very good!

Model :Airfix (boo hoo) 1/72 Mil 'Rotorwing'

At first I felt puzzled: a single rotor was meaning torque (in my mind) so the need for antitorque device (and I saw none).
But there are jets at the rotor blade tips, so the rotation is free from the fuselage point of view, with zero torque, all right...
Very nice model.

Well, that made me dream of a nice combo Gyrodyne/Rotodyne (see http://www.whatifmodelers.com/forum//index...=0&#entry164348 )... Thanks Glenn! ^_^

DA! Was filthy monopoly-capitalist running dog scheme to use great technology of Soviet Union for nefarious deeds. But glorious Russian scientists embedded mistakes in plans to cause production of inferior machine!  :P

Ah yes Comrade, I remember it well (vodka permitting, of course). The experiments we did with NK-12 turboprops on this airframe were glorious to behold. The speeds we achieved....
But I shall speak of this no more, for the Party is always right and our resources were needed elsewhere.
