Thanks for the compliments- I use Adobe Illustrator 10 for my illustrations- for my illustrations, I typically start from scratch with a side profile photograph or drawing and then use photographs from the internet, books, etc. to add the smaller details. I have one of those graphics pads where you use a stylus just like a pen (for those curious- I have a Wacom Graphire4).

Technical standards? Usually I just use a lot of reference material that's in books or even on the internet on markings, camoflauge schemes. It's not much different than what you might put into some research work for building a model kit- only in this case I'm building the subject digitally.

I don't necessarily think it's a matter of having artistic capabilities, but it can help, but there are many other ways around it. One way is via the use of Photoshop. Tom Cooper on the ACIG forum gives a nice little tutorial on how he uses Photoshop to create his profiles:

While I'm not a master illustrator like Sench or IF-14, I use stock 3-view images off Google search, imported into MSPaint and use the cut/copy feature.
