In 1939 with the Hurricane, Spitfire and Whirlwind all in production the UK was finally able to offer it's western partners, particularly those in the Northern Maritime Alliance, the oportunity to update their own air-arms in the face of the growing "Red Menace". One of the first countries to take the UK up on this offer was Denmark, a key player in the Alliance because of it's position at the entrance to the Baltic. Keen to replace it's aging Dweotine 510's (see an earlier post) the Danes initially ordered 18 Hurricane Mk I's and signed a memorandum of understanding for 24 Whirlwind Mk II's to be delivered in 1940/1941. It was felt the more robust Hurricane would provide an easier transition to modern aircraft for both pilots and ground crew. Once the Whirlwinds with their far superior range and armament were recieved then the Hurricanes would be used for in the defensice role whilst the Whirlwinds would be used to patrol Danish waters.

Latter on some Hurricane Mk II's were purchased from ex RAF stocks as attrition replacements and the remaining Mk I's were rearmed with 2 Marsden 20mm cannon and 2 .303's per wing. In this form they served alongside the Whirlwinds until replaced by late mark Spitfires in 1945.

This is the venerable Airfix kit (the MK I boxing) which although simple has held up very well in terms of the mould. Painted in standard RAF camo but with the aluminium painted undersides. Markings are from an ld Thunderflash sheet I have
