While they make it sound as though it works "like a force field,"  doesn't this system actually simply send up a stream of metal fragments against incoming warheads?

Looks like a "Smart" Active explosive armour system, the next step up from the passive re-active explosive systems.

But, boy some of the folks who post on that site are gullible.

Phalanx for tanks :)  Making it directional allows you to carry less weight of reactive explosive and to get a more focussed effect on the incoming projectile.  Like the video says, a lot more popular with friendly, dismounted troops too.  What would be really clever would be a combination of tracking the projectile and focussing allowing disruption of a kinetic round, perhaps IFV-calibre rather than a 120mm DU - no more heavy armour, perhaps...  Not surprisingly this was described as under development, but so are lasers.  Certainly great potential but nice and pricey too.

From my understanding its basically a tank mounted equivalent of a CIWS, capable of shooting down RPG's in flight. There was a story several months ago on CNN about how the US Army was interested in such a system. Israel has one operational, and many in the Army wanted to buy it, but Congress had given a contract to an influential US company worth a couple billion dollars and were actively discouraging procurement of the Israeli system in favor of the home grown one, which is still several years away.

I heard though that the israeli system wasnt fully developed and has a shorter range than the raytheon(?) one, though.
