Does anyone know if there were any proposals for a multi-role version of the Crusader (beyond its built in ground attack capability in the F-8E versions, with the two wing hardpoints). Perhaps with more hardpoints, or even a similar wing to the Corsair?

They were two
The Vought V-1000 had a J-79 and improved avionics.
GB also studied a Crusader variant (to be build by Short) with Spey and A2G weapons.

And the frenchmen also plan improved crusader  ;)

French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

You'd probably want similarly spaced hardpoints, but not the same wing as the Corsair II's wing has less sweep to it, putting a limit on performance.

Before the V-1000 Archibald mentions, Vought made several proposals offering the Crusader to various nations as a land-based fighter.  Some of these proposals involved retrofitting the "E" wing to older F-8s.  I remember seeing a blurb in Air Progress from 1965 or 66 mentioning that this type was offered to Lebanon.

yep! I think the crouze was a competitor to the F-104G and Grumman F-11F-1 superTiger in the late 50's...

Shasper

Here's my thought for a more capable F-8, even though it's for my alt. Intermediate Export FX time line (F-16/79 and F-20 fame). Land based, new F100 engine, radar and fixed incident wing w/ av hump. Still needs a canopy as the original went MIA (and finding a 1/100 F-8 clear is like finding snow in da bayou in the middle of winter.).

Note the new outer pylons & the centerline mount.

So, this would have given the Israelis a reason to paint those yellow IFF triangles on the F-8s that they almost got from the USN in '73.

Radish

I like it.
My latest (ie about 2 years ago!!) F-8 in RN markings has a skull and crossed bones on the fin.
I'm still "working" on a 1/48th F-8E with an extra pylon under the wing. A bomb-truck....probably Pakistani.
