Supplemented ? You mean 'carried', didn't you ?  ;)  :P

But you do have some good choices there, Comrade !

In my world, Eddie, our carriers will be doing the same thing yours are....projecting power and protecting the boys ashore.

Ok folks,

Thank you for your suggestions/comments.  I've decided to go with Gary's suggestion of  the HMCS Hampton Grey.  I did a bit of research on his actions in WWII - see here and must admit that the idea of naming a carrier after a Canadian Naval Aviator who won the VC is appealling.  I hope you all approve - hopefully you will see the story shortly (along with some profiles by Richard ;) ).

Regards,

Greg

QuoteI do have a question for the Canadians. What does a carrier in HMCS do for your country? Project power? Ensure open sea lines? What's the mission? I had to ask, as I know next to nothing about my neighbors to the north navy.

According to an article in the Halifax Mail Star and a discussion I had over beers with a senior member of the bid committee the current carrier procurment documents call for an multipurpose assault support and supply ship. Helo insertion for first assualt troops with CF-35 (original plans) fixed air wing support but also with the caipability to support the other ships in the area with fuel and supplies. The flight deck is requited to handle what is projected to be the heavest choppers. There was no ski jump thingy to be put on the bow to accomidate fixed wings, however, there has been debates about having fixed wings at all now and what to do if it's deemed necessary. Comprehensive hospital section for dealing with casualities. Also it's required to have roll on roll off caipability to bring armour, transport trucks and huminatrian aid into relatively modern ports. (not beach roll off) Thus initial insertion can be backed up by light and heavy armour. (the vehicle deck has to be caipable of handeling heavy armour and very large transport vehicles) There is no requiement for a wet deck or amphibious assualt. Tonnage was specified to be in the 40,000 tonnes range. The bid calls for one ship but there may be a second.(don't count on it)

This bid is massive for what the ship is expected to do. Force projection yes. However there is a lot of intention to include humanitarian work as well. When the Tsunami hit Asia, a lot of folks realized how pathetically equipped we are and immediately people started thinking about how do we fulfill our global responsability.

Gary, sounds like you're talking about the proposed JSS, a combination LPD and AOR (and huge waste o' money). Much more about it at Canadian Armed Services Review.

So what would the ship's motto be:
"We come in peace"
"To boldly go where no man has gone before"
"Phasers on stun"

You got her dude, 'cept the drawing I was shown had an extended flight deck for the choppers down the port side similar to some of the French assault carriers. It didn't pass the bridge however. One of the requirements was launching 6 heavy choppers in very quick succession for assaults, but I don't think we have 6 working choppers to begin with.  ^_^

Seriously, this looks like a much more refined idea from what I saw. What I saw was much more akin to to the French ships but with a superstructure that ran the full deck length with the front third  of the flight deck side blocked by what I guess was the bridge.

What do you suppose those big cutouts in the side are? Ship to ship support hatches? What a great reflector for radar! My microwave oven could pick that up! Agreed on the waste of dough!

PS: the HMCS Hampton Grey!
