If you'er using a Swann Morton scalpe try a number 15 blade, good all rounder  ;)

I use the #23 myself. I like the Swann-Morton system; the blades are very sharp when new. They go dull rather quickly though, so my workbench is always littered with old blades (which I use as a tool for sculpting filler, etc.)

Your tip reminded me to take a look at the rest of their range; for some types of work a straight-edge blade (something like #11) might be better.

Hobbes, the No.23 blade is for the number 4 handle.  The No.11 is designed for the number 3 handle & won't fit yours.  If it's a flat blade your after, you'll need the No.25A or No.26.

There's a link here to Swann Morton with the compatible blades for the number 4 handle:

I tend to prefer the No.10 rounded blade, I find you can cut through something with less pressure, useful if you don't want the blade flying off somewhere.  It's also good for scoring around curved surfaces.  I've never tried the No.15, always thought it's a little small, might give it a go.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

I use 6, 15 and 15A blades a lot, 10A and 11 less so and usually have a 23 lying around as well for 'heavy duty' work.

All on handles, along with a couple for filler!

The fine range have some nice beveled/chisel edged ones for , well, fine work
It's not an effing  jump jet.
