Just got back from a FANTASTIC day at Coningsby for the Jags retirement.  13 Jaguars in formation, a 3-ship aerobatic display of Typhoons, gorgeous, clear blue skies (only ruined by the howling gale)

Oh, and IHG got crushed by a fence knocked over by a Typhoon coming in to land.....that's what you get when you stand under the flightpath :D  He's OK though - apart from the merciless abuse he got from me the rest of the day

Pics (and lots of them) to follow when I've sorted them out and uploaded them :)

Wicked stuff ! Must have been amazing seeing that many in the air together, and especially the aerobatic demo !

And that's too funny about IHG...hahaha ! It's okay to laugh, as long as he's okay, right ?

;)

Looking forward to seeing the piccies !

Wow.....those are awesome pics ! That first one of the Tornado is wicked.

Such a shame about those Jags being retired, tho.....such a tough looking bird. The big '6' formation sure was sweet !

That last pic is too funny...must've been quite scary at the time ! I say sue 'em !

Sniff!   :(

The sight of those Jags reminds me of the big F-14 flypast at Oceana a couple of years ago.  It's a shame to see them go.

Beauty pics!

So what will become of 6 Sqn. now? Will they be going to Typhoons or something else? Surely they can't disband the RAF's longest continuously serving unit.

No6 should stand up as a Typhoon Sqn at RAF Leuchars, but that is a year off I think.

IHG must be very pleased - the first target taken out by Typhoon in an air-ground sortie, demonstrating the aircraft's ability to achieve effect with minimum collateral damage... Not even the Taleban will be able to take that claim to fame away from him.

6 Squadron is due to stand up (or 'form' as we used to say) as the first Typhoon unit at Leuchars in mid-2008. To maintain the record of continuous service, though, all the RAF has to do is to not disband it.

There is no reason why the squadron can't be 'numberplate only' status, based (in the loosest sense of the word) at CGY. Then on (say) 1 June 2008, the squadron nominally 'moves' to Leuchars where it collects its aeoplanes to re-equip rather than reform.

216 Squadron was required to give up all its Buccaneers and lost all its personnel in the early 1980s as a result of the Bucc grounding and the reduced fleet that emerged after rectification, but never formally disbanded - it techncially re-equipped with Tristars, so its service 'on the books' between 1981(ish) and 1984 was continuous (even if this is a bit of a cop-out).
