Chaps, let's say that the hopes the Chinese had for Harrier operation came to a successful conclusion.

Let's say they had some Harriers assembled from kits and some produced from scratch.

What would the Chinese designation be?
Would it have a "name" or nickname?

I need help (it's been said before!!) as I know nowt about Chinese thingies, but there's people here who do.

I need it (help, advice that is) as I'm putting the finishing stages to a Chinese Harrier based on a GR3 (1/48th Airfix) and I want a back story text to go with it.

Please!??

I'm guessing since it's more of a CAS bird either an ' A ' or ' Q ' designating letter.

Given it's role and likely time period of service, I would give it the designation of either Q-7 or JQ-1 or JQ-7 or JH-8.  The reasoning behind each designation is as follows:

Q-7:  'Q' for Qiangjiji (Attack) and the fact that there was no known Q-7;

JQ-7:  'J' for Jianjiji (Fighter), 'Q' as above - hence a Fighter/Attack aircraft = CAS role,  I'm also thinking the old Harrier did have some air-to-air capability.

JQ-1:  As above but the first such aircraft (there being no other known JQ aircraft); or

JH-8: 'J' as above, 'H' for Hongzhaji (Bomber) and '8' since in would follow on from the JH-7 (a.k.a. FBC-1 "Flying Leopard").

I hope this helps - see here for more information.

As for possible nicknames - my suggestion is:

Shēng - Chinese (I believe) for a Stoat or Weasel.  My reasoning being that such creatures are small ferocious, creatures often viewed as sneaky - perfect for a VTOL attack aircraft such as the Harrier which could 'pop-up' from no where.

Loved "Hallier"

Thanks, Greg. Got something sensible to go on.

I'll post the back story when I've written it this week, and who knows, pictures might appear.
The model will debut on Thursday at IPMS Stafford, but will also go to Elscar next month on June 6th for their meeting.
Thereafter? Depends on shows.

Thanks again.
