QuoteSounds like we need to start working on some profiles and start kitbashing.

Okay, had a play about this evening:

If it looks a bit Gripen-ish, that's intentional.  The Gripen shared alot of Viggens features so I guessed that a Super Viggen would have gone down a similar route.  I've largely removed the spine, changed the canopy, extended the nose, enlarged & changed the shape of the intakes, changed the wing & canards to ones resembling those from Gripen, added a F110 engine & lengthed the nose.  I've kept the Viggens distinctive tail, being slightly lower to allow for the change in the spine.
Hi Mosie, you have done an awesome work. With your permision I will use it as a basis for my model. Maybe I use so of Evan's suggestions

Thanks a lot to you 2

Carlos.

Another model for Ysi bench

In fact your supper-Viggen looks like a scaled-up (by 25%) Gripen. This would solve range problem of the Gripen... I was surprised by the size of the Viggen compared to the Drakken and Gripen. Looks a bit like a 1/48 scale model...

My computer stubbornely refused to show the pics this morning       but now I see them... good job Mossie! The profile view remind me of a Phantom, probably because of the canopy

Ysi, maybe you should use Heller kit for your build. Cheap, easy to build, and, more interesting, two noses in the box (could be useful to butcher the recon nose to build the longer radome showed on Mossie's plan)
King Arthur: Can we come up and have a look?
French Soldier: Of course not. You're English types.
King Arthur: What are you then?
French Soldier: I'm French. Why do you think I have this outrageous accent, you silly king?

Well regardless I would rather take my chance out there on the ocean, that to stay here and die on this poo-hole island spending the rest of my life talking to a gosh darn VOLLEYBALL.

Carlos, you pull that off, and I'm building you a cardboard (Yum!!!) statue in South America!

UUUuuumm, I love cardboard (Cardboard, Yum!!!)
OK, I know I can't stop scratchbuilding. Someday, I will build something OOB....

I've made some changes to take in Evans comments about the spine & 'stinger'.  Thanks Evan, I'm glad you like the changes!  I've placed a small spine in there.  To keep the stinger the same size, I've faired it into the spine.  I could have changed the tail to fit it in, swings & roundabouts I guess.  I've added a little antenna on the fin for RWR/ECM, whatever.  It looks a little more like earlier Viggens now, when they didn't have the large avionics lump at the rear of the spine.

Carlos, you are more than welcome to use this profile as a basis for your build, I'd be honoured!  Please feel to use any aspect of it or change it to how you want it.  B)

Arc, there's a number of reasons I extended the nose.  Firstly, some of the avionics in other parts of the aircraft could be moved here to make room for extra fuel.  The Viggen is big & heavy & even with a more efficient engine & use of composites, any extra fuel would be useful.
Secondly, there's planning for the future.  Most modern aircraft have aquired many extra fairings, lumps & bumps to house new equipment & greeblies.  There's very few types that have got away with this, even larger aircraft having recieved some major airframe changes.  Having a bit of spare space might be helpful for when the multi-phase flipitronic dooberie is invented, & it also helps if an export customer wants a beefier capability.
Finally, artistic lisence, I simply wanted a different look to the original Viggen!  Although I did want to keep it plausible, so I thought of the reasons above.
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Fair enough, extended nose to get a cleaner airframe. Another thing that I noticed those are some big wingtip rails (For AMRAAM/Meteor?).

I had the Viggen buzzing over my head all my childhood and I can tell you that not only much bigger than the Gripen but also much noisier so my mom ws quiet pleased when they were replaced  :D

Mossie

Yeah, nice large rails to take modern BVR missiles.  I also figured it'd have a good strong wing to be able to take large amounts of ordanance, again this seems to be a growing need.  It'd keep the adaptability of the real Viggen, again, the lengthened nose helps with this for different mission fits.

OK Mossie, a last favour,
have you calculated length and wingspan?

Mossie

No, but I probably could quite easily.  Stay tuned!

These are pretty rough Carlos, but I measured it at :

1/1
Wing Span: 12.2m
Length: 16.5m.

1/72
Wing Span: 169mm
Length: 229mm

1/48
Wing Span: 254mm
Length: 344mm

That equates for only a very small change to the nose, up to you wether you'd want to bother with it or make it a little larger.  The measuresments ar pretty rough because of the way I did them & the profiles aren't exact, so don't worry about getting too close.  Also, I didn't apply any logic to the size of the wing, I just went for what looked right!

It is OK, thanks. It is only to print it right.
At the end, available styrene will rule, but I will try to adjust to the drawing because it looks right to me.

BTW: From which plane did you get the canopy? Gripen?
Will die without understanding this world.

Mossie

No, I just extended the Viggens original canopy, but I tried to keep a similar shape to the Gripens, if you use that you should get a similar shape.
