photographed this 'folding winged MiG.21 at the aircraft museum at Vantaa ... definately food for thought for 'what-iffers'... lol

The aircraft is one of a batch of retired MiG.21F airframes 'modified' to act as MiG.21bis decoys, (note the resited nose probe and later MiG. colour scheme and 3 digit code) the wings and tail fin were fitted with hinges enabling transport on a trailer unit for deployment ... something different im sure youll agree...

(in a similar vein, the US. Navy had an A.4 Skyhawk fitted with similarly fol;ding wings for transport for use as a recruitment tool!)

In 1977, a Norvegian P-3B took this photo over the North Sea...  
Seems that a naval MiG-21 prototype had been build by a MiG OKB ingenier named Ysili Maniav

As an alternative, how about a naval, operational variant of the "I-23-31", (sometimes referred to incorrectly in Western sources as the "MiG-21PD"). Though folding wing's might still be used.
