Or you could start with an F-5 for an X-10ish vehicle.
Chop off the canopy and vertical tail, move the wings all the way aft, turn the horizontal tails into twin vertical tails and add some triangular canards.

I just might try that. Plenty of F-5 kits out there that won't bust the budget.

... just dug out an old Revell X.3... mwah hahahaha... time for some more doodling methinks... ill admit i kinda fancy that VG. strike design tho, altho im finding trouble making it look ok on paper!!?

I would think that adding some AIM-4 Falcons to the X-3 when the Genies are not needed would be an added plus as well as early Sparrows.

Like the Grumman X-29B proposal that was detailed in an AIAA paper in the 1980s, it added a GE ADEN (Augmented Deflected Exhaust Nozzle) nozzle to the X-29.  As I remember, ADEN was a 2-D vectoring and variable-area nozzle.

Not as good an approach as adding an AVEN (Axisymmetirc Vectoring Exhaust Nozzle) one, but still a good approach.
