Hmm, it turns out that the USN did have a designator for DeHavilland, DH, so it could be a FDH-1 "Sea Vixen" or, if provided via DHC, it could be a FC-1, esp. since Curtiss was out of the aircraft business by then and manufacturers' letters were recycled with the actual type number (FF, F2F, F3F, etc.) recycled for each change of manufacturer.

See here for a full breakdown of pre-1962 USN designations.  Thus, XFJ-1 is used for both the prototype NAA "Fury" and a much earlier, and "different-looking" biplane from Berliner-Joyce:
