If you ever want to subject yourself to perfect misery then I suggest you embark on a major construction project on a 200 year old farmhouse through the depths of a Wallonian mid-winter while recovering from a broken back. I've had no modellling and no Internet for a few months but now I'm back in the game! However, most of my models are covered in construction dust. Has anybody got any top tips for cleaning them? I'm thinking airbrush with no paint in it and maybe some screen wipes?

some of the boys on here have stolen the big makeup brushes their other halves use. Im told they are quite good at disposeing of dust.
I always hope for the best.

1) Assemble a selection of brushes in various sizes and stiffnesses, and some paper towels

2) DON'T RUSH! Be patient

3) Do all work over a white board so that parts coming off will not be lost to the carpet monster

4) Yes, there will be breakages, but they can be repaired

5) Stay sober

6) If possible repair any breakages immediately to lessen the chance of misplacing parts

7) Take frequent sanity breaks

Before being packed up for the house move all my models hung from the ceiling in the spare bedroom, which required periodic dusting (usually prompted be the other half that if I didn't do it---she would  :o )  I tried the compressed air route and even though it would remove the piled up loose dust it left a certain amount of minute particules still attached to the model (so did vacuuming BTW, using a small attachment used for cleaning out keyboards etc.)  Unfortunately, Mr.Rodent' method proved to be the only way of really dusting the models which would take a couple of days as I had well over 200 models to do.  And yes, Rule 6 is important.

My preferred method is compressed air used for dusting off computer/electronic equipment (found in office supply & electronic stores), the other thing I found to work is those static-cling dusting wipes (Swiffer(tm) ).

I simply use the oversized blush brush, Maybeline brand in fact.  Its bristle retract nicely into the handle. Haven't had so much as a pitot tube come loose, in fact.  Between picking out nail polish removers (for the acetate), eye-shadows (for weathering powders), 5-grit nail buffers, and blush-brushes, I think I spend an inordinate amount of time at the cosmetics counter.

I have an old shaving brush that works quite well.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.  ;D

I am quite frankly astounded that we got this far in the thread without someone saying "There is NOOOOOOOO... rule 6!

I'd start with the airbrush (or just the compressor hose) to get rid of the larger particles. Then a brush, and if all else fails, you can use water (but that's a major operation). I wouldn't use screen wipes etc. except as a last resort.

I still am! However, the end fell off my house and I need to fix it so I can sell it to buy kits when I arrive in Australia. This has proved a very complicated affair involving insurance companies and building contractors. The house is going on the market next month and as soon as it sells I'm on my way to Brisbane.
