Seriously, the US especially has been developing laser weapons such as the Airborne Laser, High Energy Tactical Laser & Advanced Tactical Laser (which is being slated for use on the AC-130).  It's probably only a matter of time before we start seeing some kind of laser or particle weapons in use.  They're usually asscoiated with airborne targets & ground targets are usually glossed over.  I often get the feeling that this is because the industry is taking the 'it sounds nasty so lets not talk about it' approach rather there being no research being carried out.
