Another suggestion might be to see if your camera's set on Macro mode, if possible.  With that in mind, the next step is to see if you can define your camera's focus.  I know my first pics with my little Canon were horrid for focus, because it was set to Automatic Face Detection, and would pick the most obscure things to identify as faces, quite often NOT what I was aiming at.  After a little adjustment, I managed to get it to focus on what was in the center crosshair, and since then we've gotten along a whole lot better.  The projects look interesting, to say the least.

My Canon A590 was all of $170 before taxes, so you might find something useful without blowing $600 for professional grade.

Great stuff.  That first F-84/COIN bird could also pass as an alternative to the SU-25 Frogfoot. . .  Just thinking out loud.
