Frame your work

So like most modelers I think my work is a piece of art.  So I decided to start framing my work to match my humble opinion of it.  Here are a few examples for your enjoyment.

SU-27 Flanker B

EF-111 Raven

Yak-28

A-7 Corsair II

O-1/L-19 Bird Dog

OH-6 / LOH Cayuse

This will give you an idea how my work area looks at home.  This wall is in my converted garage which is now office and workbench for modeling and fixing computers.

The frames are low cost $3.00 from wall mart in the appropriate size.   The larger 1/48" models and 1/32" needed a larger frame so I got the framing materials from Michaels.   The Tarmac in most cases is painted carboard or foam board with drafting tape or simple materials like sandpaper (Yak).

Enjoy

Not bad, and then when you want to take a project to the local show all you'll have to do is pop the frame off . . .

Actually for shows I just take them frame and all (they are already on their display!).

We don't just embrace insanity here.  We feel it up, french kiss it and then buy it a drink.

Neat!
How do you attach your models?

Weaver

That's a good-looking idea!

As an alternative, you could mount them on mirrors to show off the underside.

Attaching the models

Most of the models that are small in size and do not weight too much can be attached with Tacky Glue or good old elmers glue (this really applies to light weight models) 1/144, 1/72).  The larger scales 1/48, 1/32 etc need more help. This comes in the way of thin copper wire (strip an old extension and you'll have plenty) tied through the landing gear to assist the glue in keeping the model in place.

This brings in the subject of gear strength.  Some models have very fragile landing gear, so this is the time to strengthen the gear or use cast metal landing gear if available.  Specially on heavy subjects.

On larger models (I have a 1/32 F-117) I drilled throug the wheel and attached a post that is epoxied to the foam board (this sucker is heavy!).  That keeps him from nosediving into the tile floor.  The gear was further strengthen by using steel axels for the wheels (a finishing nail donated the steel for the axle and the post).
