FDIII would be firing from above a Arrow and with Red Hebe it would be beyond the range of Sparrow III.
FDIII would outclimb, outturn and outrun the Arrow.

FDIII was to Spec F155T, the Arrow was never in the running, and Avro knew it when they got a request to make a proposal, they declined.
Arrow was good enough to kill off the Thin Wing Javeline, though.

QuoteAnd if the wait is too long, a RCAF tanker Concorde will come by and refuel the CF-105.

Nah it would be shot down by Blue Envoy SAM's, or FDIII's using Red Hebe's.

Still not the top UK design...that goes to a P42 design for a mach4.5 fighter....which I happen to have a picture of, I'll post it some time.

LAncer, you said
Quotebut it'd be a bit difficult when you are dodging AAM's launched at you from way below ya!!

So that means the FDIII is below the Arrow!!!

ARe you really sure you meant this?

Oh, we could probably fuel 5 Arrows for every FDIII...

Not for very long:D
To win without fighting, that is the mastry of war.

Yes, true.

Because it'll have to land somewhere and get some fuel.

Thirsty engines, eh?

Zen

Hmm not that much more than most jets of the periode. But then it depends on the type. If we're talking about the RB122 then its a scaled up RB106 which shares a lot with the Iriquois used in the Arrow (rumour is a lot of RB106 technology went into the Iriquois). Otherwise we could talk about the use of Olympus's (as per the mutlirole version) which would give it similar endurance.

No on the whole the FDIII would quite quickly climb above the Arrow (without the use of rockets which would take it aboe 90,000ft), but even if it did'nt the Red Hebe AAM is more than able to take down a jet up to 7,000ft above the launch vehicle.

BTW the RAF did look at local build of Arrow's at one point and studied various UK engines (the cost of buying the thing complete from Canada was felt to be too high) and missiles. I think they where settling on RB106's or Gyrons but the later would require a 'beefed up' rear end to handle the larger (and hotter) engine.
They where quite impressed by the Hughe fire control system I undestand.

Well, seeing as the FDIII crew let the arrow crew take off 10 minutes before hand, yeah it would be below, but still climbing and popping off Red Hebe's at the same time.
If you love, love without reservation; If you fight, fight without fear - THAT is the way of the warrior

If you go into battle knowing you will die, then you will live. If you go into battle hoping to live, then you will die

Captain Canada

The problem is, I've been mistaking the FD.III for the little FD.II..........is the III the one on the cover of that book ?

If so, that thing rocks !
