Yak-52 demonstrator touted to the Empire Test Pilot School & painted in Raspberry Ripple.  Not operated by the ETPS as far as I'm aware.

I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughin'. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

That would be an interesting colour scheme on a mig-29.

I think Jennings did one, but I can't find the thread for the life of me.

Thanks Paul!  It seems it was a Su-27 & it was Richards rather than Jennings.

OK, I'm still not quite sure on the actual technical definition, but I think I can understand the pattern design.  I just have to wonder - is red/white/blue Mandatory, or would it ostensibly be simply the national colours, just thinking in a random direction here.  German or Belgian Ripple anybody, with Black/Gold/Red?

Raspberry ripple is an umbrella term that describes a standard scheme worn by several UK test agencys since about 1975, including the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), Aircraft & Armament Experimental Establishment (A&AEE), Empire Test Pilot School (ETPS) & Institute of Aviation Medicine.  These are now run privately by QinetiQ, along with the Defence Evaluation & Test Agency (DERA) & it continues to use the raspberry ripple scheme.

Red, white & blue are the usual colours, although others were used before 1975 & before 1970ish the aircraft of the various establishments wore highly individual schemes.  In the rasberry ripple era, there have been variations on the theme, including BAC-111 replacing the blue portion with yellow.  The pattern used, although very similar, is slightly different for each aircraft concerned.  The red rear is often used, but not always, & sometimes only extends to the blue portion.  Extra white lines have been introduced on some aircraft & the colours used on the wings differ in their placement.

Have a look at this thread for more info:

As for using different colours, why not?  Like I mentiond above, different colours have been used before, so why not new ones?   To take in your Belgian & German idea, if QinetiQ acquired test agency's of other nations, maybe it'd use their national colours in a similar pattern?

Here's that BAC-111:

That yellow/red/white 1-11 is XX105, the one that was originally assigned to the Blind Landing Experimental Unit at RAE Bedford.

The yellow was something to do with the ground engineers needing to sight on it with theodilites when it was on the approach. It was repainted at Cranfield when I was there sometime in the 60s-70s, and thats what they told me.

Somewhere I have a copy of the painting scheme drawing for it, not seen it for ages though.
Kit's Rule 1 ) Any aircraft can be improved by fitting longer wings, and/or a longer fuselage
Kit's Rule 2) The backstory can always be changed to suit the model
