Mechanical stoking was a common technology by the end of the 19th century.
Systems existed in a wide variety of forms, a few used powdered coal however
the majority fed lump coal. BTW powdered coal can be highly explosive.

One of the issues that gets overlooked in the steampunk genre is ash removal,
mechanized (even semi-automated) stoking is easy, getting rid of the ash
and clinker requires some thought. Water consumption is the other biggie.

I've long loved steampunk, even before that name was given it. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
In want of hobby space!  The kitchen table is never stable.  Still managing to get some building done.
