? Surprise... Are Aussies speaking in km/m/cm/mm not like our British friends  (miles/yards/feet/inch) ? It would be a good news... Let me explain the World I am dreaming of (for next generation) : what-if...
- we would all speak English, so much more simple than French/German/Russian/Chinese
- we would all speak in km/m/cm/mm ang kg/g, so much more simple than yd/in and lb/oz
- for time, there will be like km/m : a *10 basis everywhere - the rotation of the Earth would make the unit day D, the new (double-)hour would be dD (10 per day, with 3 for work and 3 for sleep), the new quarter would be cD (10 per hour), the new (double-)minute would be mD (10 per quarter). On the other side, the month would be daD (10D per one) - with unchanged monthly wages, to be accepted more easily (by employees I mean) ! Then, the year will be hD (10 months per one), simply. Let you count, it makes 100 days per year, and as there is a need to match the winter/summer period (or rain/dry seasons in tropical areas), we need... rocket boosters all around the planet to move the Earth 3.65 times faster.

Here in Britain the EU are sending people to prison for continuing to use imperial measures - not a joke btw    

As a scientist I use g, kg, mm, cm, m every day without thinking about it.  Outside of work I use exclusively imperial measurements.  Indeed at work I could tell someone in one breath that I just measured 50mg of sample into 100ml solvent and in the next tell them how I drove 3 miles to buy a pound of apples.  Go figure  

However the day that the EU tries to ban the advertising of pints of beer is the day the British Army invades Brussels!

The hoist on our wireline logging unit at work reads depth in meters, but our weight is in lbs !

As to the 'Brumby' being seen in other airfirces, well, that's up to you! Me, well I build 'one-off's' only. But, to all you modellers out there, go for it, I'd love to see one in USAF markings, wouldn't that be a hoot!

As to the Metric system, here in OZ, have been 'metric' since 1976. Seeing 'we' are close to the Asian markets, it was decided to change, to their way and remove the Imperial completely. It was ok for the school kids and people in their 20's~30's, to change, but how do you tell a pentioner who is knocking 70 that 24.5mm =1 inch!
My grandmother, went into a butcher and asked for a Km of sausages, (she was after a Kilo) and all rules and tape measurers were changed also. But not all the way, tape measures are still Imperial and Metric.
There was a joke here of a bloke who went into a hardware store and asked for a length of 4x2. (4"x2" pine) And was told that you couldn't get those measurements, they came as 100x50mm. When he asked what length, the answer '6 feet!' So, you tell me?
Being a modeller, I found it simple with the metric system, I remember seeing an American model car magazine, where some guy showed how to build a workshop in 1/25sc. With 5 and 7/32" long by 3 and 3/32"wide, I couldn't believe it! With me, the only thing I don't try to work out is Litres per 100Km, I still think in Mpg!

Well, for one thing, you don't.     you tell him that 25.4 mm = 1 inch.  

*chuckle* We may still use "old fashioned" measurements, but that doesn't mean I don't know the conversion factors.  Of course, the old system had a few nice conversions that fell out, 15 mph = 22 fps.

As far as I am concerned, I find a change in the roundels not enough - I would prefer a field&forest camouflage or something with personality, no ?

(Last words about units :
* My brother's girlfriend did not mix km and kg but faced severe laughter when as a child she required from a fruit shop "a half pound of grapefruit"... (fruit shops were using the old unit "livre" = lb, not learnt at school) : the man answered "hey, just say one grapefruit, stupid girl !".
* At my work, for HPLC, some machines use p.s.i. pressures while the others use international bar - it is so special and not connected to everyday calculations that there is no problem with the imperial one.
* I have never found easy to change the engine powers into international : daN instead of both lb and kg, kW instead of hp, I do not blame the British refusal to change.
* In Europe, we have changed local moneys into Euro, and it has been uneasy too, and the British electors have refused while the French electors were not even asked. But a few years after, I agree that it is best to spend in German or Belgian shops (for models or books) the money that would have been wasted uselessly in bank change fees... I just regret that we have not all adopted directly the US $ instead of inventing a new money. I know that Politicians want a local power on something, but in a democracy, the people should decide, not some poweful leaders... What-if the people could decide...)

Far from What-if models... Well, I have used Varian, Perkin-Elmer, Kontron/Bio-Tek apparatus, mainly, and also Waters and the others in training sessions. But now my work is mainly microbiology, like Libellula - with no more relation to aircraft... But I prefer aviation enthusiasts smiling than joyless professionals seeing no fun at all and requiring holly respect to their dominating status ... Chemistry has never made me dream, it is just very useful, requiring serious technicians like us, dreaming of something else after hours... Of course, for the aircraft being safe, very serious professionals are absolutely needed in aviation, but in a different direction : aviation is also a dream. Let us live apart, without fighting the JMNs.

I work out my cars fuel consumption as miles per litre (average about 10mpl for my old Escort) cos those are the units I use. I fill the tank with litres of petrol and then drive a distance measured for me in miles. Simple!
