In the current (September 2009) issue of the Smithsonian's Air and Space magazine, there is a very good article about professional model makers and many of the "What If" designs they come up with.  If you see the magazine, you can't miss the story - there are about a dozen What If models on the cover.

I saw that in the grocery store this morning.  There are some nice designs in there: VSTOL fighters, stealth craft, a neat pusher carrier support aircraft, etc.

There is an excellent discussion going on about this article over on the Secret Projects site:

Bought the issue and enjoyed it very much.
Modeling isn't just about how good the gluing or painting, etc. looks. It's also about how creative and imaginative you can be with a subject.
My modeling philosophy is: Don't build what everyone else has done. Build instead what nobody has seen or done before.

I happened to be in Croydon today (don't ask) and I stopped by the WH Smiths and they had 2 copies left.
This means the other one will still be there tommorrow!?
It must also indicate that it must be available in other larger WH Smiths shops in the UK?

spooky, that probably means we both thumbed through the very same tatty copy at the front of the shelf and put it back before retrieving a pristine copy from the back of the pile!

can magazines have 6 degrees of seperation (or 1 degree in this case)

and, if you work for the UKBA....  were talking Voodoo  or some other mysticism or magic

I am not sure if the subsciption option would be available in the uk?

however, usually my magazine budget goes the way of Aeroplane and Flypast magzines

incidently both have been running a great set of articles on the 1969 film classic  "Battle of Britian" , in particular the reuse of the spanish airforce  CASA 2.111 as Luftwaffe He-111s and the Hispano Aviacion and "Buchon" powered by Merlin Engines as Bf-109s now thats whiff on a 1:1 scale!
