Part Three

Through the night vision device, Klaus saw the lead M-10 pass by the alley. The Maus heavy tank was covered by tarps and debris, impossible to spot.
"Werner, AT load, " he said into the mike. " Target tank, 112."  The second tank-killer came into view, " Fire!"  The massive shell slammed into the second tank, exploding it into millions of pieces instantly. Debris fell down around them in a rain of metal and flesh. "Move back!" The huge tracks dug into the brickwork and the tank went into reverse, hiding itself into the garage  of the factory, hidden from the enemy.
The first tank jumped forward from the blast. " Jesus! What the hell was that?" the commander screamed down the hatch. "Echo One, we are in an ambush!" The radio squawked, "Repeat, we are being ambushed!" The large barrel of the tank destroyer searched about the plaza, seeing no enemy vehicles at all.  "We have two burned 4's near a fountain, some ground personnel, nothing else."
"Rockets at three!"  Two X-7's, stubby wings with bright exhaust trails leapt  from the dark roofways of the ruined city.  The missiles swept down onto the Pershing tank and the M-4 halftrack.  Two explosions rocked the ground, and the Allied invasion sweep was halted completely.  The troops fired randomly into the dark, but they couldn't see anything, no muzzle flash, nothing to aim at . .45 caliber rounds bounced off of the thick white brick, raising a series of dust devils in powdered lime.
The only sound was the echo of the explosions, the roar of the burning vehicles, and the screams and moans of the wounded.
