With the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq finally drawing down, the U.S. government found itself with a surplus of high-time RQ-1 Predator airframes. As most frontline units had long since re-equipped with MQ-9 Reapers, the Predators were put up for FMS disposal.

Japan, seeing an opportunity to pick up extra equipment at bargain prices, bought and refurbished several RQ-1's for SAR duty with the JASDF. Not long after the drones went into service an international scandal burst into the media eye, when it was discovered that one of the RQ-1's had been tasked with flying reconnaissance missions for the Fisheries Agency of Japan.

This drone '010-0110' "The Binary B*st*rd" was found to have been relaying information about the position and disposition of the Sea Shepherd anti-whaling activist fleet to whaling vessels in the Antarctic. When the news broke regarding the collusion of the military and the civilian agency, the Japanese Prime Minister was forced to publicly apologize, the Diet collapsed into near anarchy, and the UN mandated a six-month moratorium on Japanese whaling.

Gorgeous UAV!  Last I heard the Japanese coast guard was looking at getting some UAVs for patrol work, don't know if they have yet.
